Attorney Biography
Gail L. Orr is Of Counsel in the Los Angeles office. She specializes in insurance coverage advice, particularly in construction defect insurance matters, insurance coverage litigation and appellate work.
Ms. Orr attended the University of Minnesota, where she received her B.A., magna cum laude, in 1980 and a Masters in Business Administration in 1982. She is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Before attending law school, she worked in the corporate offices of both Target Corporation and The Pillsbury Company. She received her J.D. from the University of Southern California in 1990. While at law school, she was selected to participate in the Moot Court Honors program. Ms. Orr began her legal career in the Los Angeles office of Buchalter, Nemer, Fields & Younger, where she worked primarily on large-scale matters regarding environmental coverage issues.
Ms. Orr has extensive experience in construction defect matters in California, Arizona and Nevada. She has been involved in numerous construction defect lawsuits, as coverage counsel for insurers with respect to both developers and subcontractors. She has also actively participated in countless mediations in those three states.
In addition to general coverage issues, Ms. Orr has been involved in analyzing and providing guidance on the application of numerous policy provisions such as known loss endorsements, continuing claims exclusions, mold exclusions, self-insured retention provisions and other evolving policy terms. She also has experience in the application of fortuity issues in insurance policies, analyzing underwriting files, excess coverage and insurance exhaustion issues. Ms. Orr has worked with many insurance carriers and insureds regarding additional insured issues, allocation of liability, the application of indemnity agreements and the identification and resolution of inter-carrier issues.
Ms. Orr has authored coverage opinions that have been the basis for successful appellate insurance decisions in Arizona and California. For example, Ms. Orr authored the appellate briefs for the Foster-Gardner, Inc. v. National Union Fire Insurance Co. of Pittsburgh, PA (1998) 18 Cal.4th 857decision in California.
